Old Mellifont Abbey

Mellifont Abbey was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. St Malachy of Armagh created it in 1142 with the help of a small number of monks sent by St Bernard from Clairvaux. It was the main abbey in Ireland until it was closed in 1539, when it became a fortified house, and now lies in ruins. The Visitor Centre houses an interesting exhibition on the work of masons in the Middle Ages with fine examples of their craft on display.

Clogherhead

Clogherhead, meaning "rocky headland" is a fishing village in County Louth. Located only 20 minutes from the circuit, about 12 km northeast of Drogheda. It is a popular location for all types of activities including, fishing, walking, sightseeing and water-based activities. The headland has a stunning walking trail from the village along steep sea cliffs to the nearby harbour of Port Oriel. At low tide, it is also possible to walk the beach as far as the Boyne Estuary.
